Daniel Nicholls

Get to know Daniel, the man behind the People Who Poo podcast made by and for inspiring everyday people.

So what exactly is the People Who Poo podcast?

Inspiring sh!t from everyday people. I’ve met so many inspiring and hilarious people in Barcelona and I love talking to them, so I just decided to start recording these conversations.

What’s behind the name?

I don’t interview celebrities or people who think they fart rose petals.

We all take a dump at some point, and we all have a story to tell. The PWP guests do both, (although we don’t tend to talk about the dump).

I really believe you can learn something from everyone, and that’s the basis.

Originally from Australia, what brought you to Barcelona?

When I turned 18 I went to do a winter season in Switzerland, then summer in San Sebastian. I visited Barcelona somewhere in between, but wasn’t a fan, as I didn’t know where to go and got stuck in tourist traps. After more time in the Basque Country, Switzerland, Japan & the US, I made my way back and fell in love with Barcelona. I’ve been here over 8 years now.

What do your guests all have in common?

They all poo, and they all inspire me. Other than that, they can vary greatly.

Some of my favourites have been a Shaman from Columbia talking about Ayahuasca ceremonies / the owners of Two Schmucks Cocktail Bar talking about how they got international recognition doing all their own marketing and design / Des McNamee who survived abuse, homelessness, heroin addiction and 3 types of cancer to kill it in the corporate world and then leave it all to start Shanti Vida, her creative yoga hub. There are some live sets with musicians too, I really think there’s something for everyone.

For you, what makes a good interview and interviewer?

Oooo… I’m very new to the game myself and I’m not sure I’m any good, but I think it’s fundamental to make the guest feel comfortable. More than interviewing, I like to have a conversation. With a good conversation, mutual respect is important, even if you don’t agree with everything the other person is saying. You can find common ground with everyone, and then discuss differences in a respectful manner, that’s how we learn to understand each other better… Joe Rogan is the master.

What is the latest song that was stuck in your head?

Tadow by Fkj & Masego – The Barcelona Triathlon was 2 days ago, and they only had 3 songs playing on the loudspeakers there… that was one of them.

What’s your favourite quote?

I like me some good quotes! I have a weekly mailing list I try and include some favourites in, so picking one is tough.

“Fail better” might be more of a mantra.

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten” – that might be Tony Robbins

Here are some quick questions to get to know you better.

Midnight swim or morning run?

Sunrise swim

SUP or surf?

Surf if it’s one of the 3 days a year BCN has waves

Sight or sound?

I have a podcast, so I’m legally required to say sound

Short or long form?

Long

Planned or spontaneous?

Spontaneous

Gold coast or Costa Brava?

Costa Rica! Moving there in a week… Jungle podcasts coming up!

Work to live or live to work?

There’s another cheesy quote for you: “Do what you love and you won’t work a day in your life.” I’m working on finding what that is.

Black, white or green? Talking about Kailani of course!

Green please!
